A KIND OF MAGIC: The OGB Gender Justice learning Event
On the 12-14th of February 2014 OGB held its first Gender Justice Learning event in over 5 years. The event was timely, as it comes on the wave of a sustained emphasis within OI andOGB to truly ‘put women’s rights at the heart of all we do’.
The objectives were to:
We were inspired by the personal journey of Zahria Mapandi, CEO of a partner organisation in the Philippines, and by the words of encouragement from Mark Goldring and a number of senior managers from OGB.
We mapped our programmatic stand alone and mainstreaming work across the globe and heard colleagues present country case studies from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Haiti, Lebanon and Uganda; we focused on thematic reflections on VAW, women’s leadership, fragility and gender, women’s economic leadership, political participation, gender budgets, care and more; and we considered a range of ways of working that have lead to considerable results.
While an OGB event, this was in principle and practice truly intended to be an OI initiative not only because colleagues from Oxfam India, Novib and Canada shared their wisdom and ample perspectives, but because we became more familiar with and committed to the values priorities and, to lesser extent structures, of the confederation as a whole.
‘It is a kind of magic, I never knew a feeling of empowerment can be of such!! ‘ Julia Ahmed, Bangladesh’
